The federal USDA-ES Smith-Lever IPM Implementation Program, administered by the UC IPM Program since 1988, promotes IPM practices to growers, homeowners, and public agencies.

Goals and priorities

In general, the funds are not used to develop IPM techniques, but are used to validate, implement, and evaluate newly developed or existing techniques. Until 1998, funds were allocated on a competitive grant basis to Cooperative Extension specialists and farm advisors. Currently, the program suppors a wide range of activities, including development and upkeep of the UC IPM Pest Management Guidelines and the UC IPM Web site.

These projects often take research results from the UC IPM Competitive Research Grants Program to the user, or adapt programs to allow for regional differences. Funds are given to support demonstrations, field days, and other methods of dissemination that will encourage growers and other potential users to adopt environmentally sound IPM practices. Priority is given to projects that lead to

reduced pesticide use,

reduced pest damage,

reduced cost of pest control, and

increased effectiveness of pest control.
