DESCRIPTION:
Junglerice, a summer annual grass, is 2 to 3 feet (60 - 90 cm) tall. Widely distributed throughout California, it infests all summer annual crops and waste areas. Cotyledons (seed leaves) are grayish or dull green. It is closely related to barnyardgrass and looks similar except for the distinctive purple bands on leaves. These bands may even be present on seedlings. There are no auricles or ligules in the collar region. Sharp-pointed, awnless spikelets are crowded alternately on branches. It germinates throughout the summer and may appear after a preplant treatment of dinitroaniline herbicides has dissipated.
